The National Front trebles its seats but wins Zero Councils in France

The Regional Councils in France are responsible for education, public transport and other administrative sectors. By the close of business today, the final votes for these Councils will be in. Nevertheless early results show that the National Front has failed to build on its first-round leads in the French local elections and has not won any regions.

Marine Le Pen’s far-right group gained more votes nationally than any other party in last week’s first round, boosted by the migration crisis and the Paris terror attacks. According to the Interior Ministry “after the final stage of voting it appears Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservatives and their centre-right allies are the big winners with six of the 13 regions”.

French National Front Party Leader Marine Le Pen told supporters in Northern France: “Nothing will stop us…..By tripling our number of councillors; we will be the main opposition force in most of the regions of France.”

In order to prevent the National Front from winning a number of key council areas, the Socialists removed losing candidates from vulnerable seats to avoid splitting the anti-National Front vote.
