Another couple of names to consider as potential interviewees are Alasdair MacLeod and Ned Naylor-Leyland. Alasdair is head of research at GoldMoney and his articles and interviews are excellent: well worth looking out for on YouTube. Ned Naylor-Leyland is a fund manager who manages the Merian Gold & Silver Fund. He has occasionally done…[Read more]

bumblethebard replied to the topic Austrian Economics in the forum Economics/Finance – National & International 6 years, 1 month ago
The standard ‘Austrian’ explanation of why there is interest at all is that it is compensation for deferred consumption. By and large, if I have some money, I would rather spend it and enjoy what I buy with it now than wait to buy next year. This is called time preference and is a common feature of the utility approach to understanding economic…[Read more]

In the UK, payday loan companies are obliged to display the APR (annualised percentage rate) of the loan. I’ve seen TV ads with rates of 1,700%. The highest I ever saw was for a loan of £70 at the start of a month, paying back £90 at the end of the month, which works out as an APR of over 2,000%.

The mention of Austrian economics in the last webinar reminded me of some excellent videos on a YouTube channel called EconStories. They were created to try to explain the basic differences between Keynesian and Austrian schools of thought to non-economists. Some take the form of a debate between Keynes and Hayek in the form of a rap. I know that…[Read more]

bumblethebard replied to the topic How Gold Value Has Increased in 50 years in the forum Gold 6 years, 2 months ago
In 1971, when the Bretton-Woods agreement came to an end, and the price of gold was no longer fixed, the average house price in the UK was approximately 250 ounces of gold. It still is. The pound on the other hand has lost more than 91% of its purchasing power.

Another interview suggestion: Erik Townsend from Macro Voices. The YouTube channel is called Macro Voices and there is a website: https://www.macrovoices.com/
Erik is a hedge fund manager and each week his channel features a longish interview (over an hour) with someone in the finance sector. Last week’s interview was with Grant Williams. https://…[Read more]

bumblethebard replied to the topic Goldmoney vs Glint in the forum Gold 6 years, 2 months ago
I haven’t used Glint, though it does look like an interesting service, so I might try it. Here are a few observations about the differences between Glint and GoldMoney.
1. GoldMoney is a public company, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Glintpay Services Ltd. appears to be a privately owned company. Public companies are subject to more…[Read more]

I would prefer a straightforward oldest-first order to the posts within a topic. Nesting of replies doesn’t help much: if the subject becomes highly complex it’s better to split it out into separate topics.
The insert image function only allows you to insert a URL to an image that already exists on the web. Alternatively, you can attach an image,…[Read more]

bumblethebard replied to the topic Oil in the forum Personal Finance & Other Investments 6 years, 2 months ago
I don’t think even the big oil companies know where the price is going. They don’t really need to since:
1. They are large and solvent and can survive a significant drop in price without going bust. Even in 1999 when the price of crude dropped to $16 a barrel, the big companies shrugged it off and many didn’t even cut their dividends.
2. They…[Read more]

I find the new ordering of posts within a topic strange. They are now running from most recent downwards, which is not how I usually expect to read them.

bumblethebard replied to the topic Audio Improvements in the forum Suggestion Box 6 years, 2 months ago
A good microphone like a Blue Yeti is very sensitive and will pick up room noise. The whirring sound might be your computer’s fan. A whistle might be feedback. In either case, turning the gain down and speaking close to the microphone is a good idea. Good mics also usually have their own headphone output socket, so you can hear your own voice…[Read more]

bumblethebard replied to the topic Audio Improvements in the forum Suggestion Box 6 years, 2 months ago
If you are not recording your voice, just capturing audio from a playing video, you can turn off the microphone input using a setting in the control panel. In fact, it would be a good idea to switch off all audio sources other than the one you are recording.
A better option is to extract the audio directly from the video by ‘ripping’. This does…[Read more]

There is a noise removal/reduction tool within Audicity. If you select a portion of your sound recording where there is no speech, just the background hiss, then you can subtract this off from the recording (Effects > Noise Removal). That said, don’t expect marvellous results. This works well with removing a hum, such as you might get from…[Read more]

Irrespective of the quality of your Internet connection, you will get much better quality recordings by spending some money on a good microphone. You don’t need professional studio quality, but if your budget runs to somewhere between £100 to £200, you could get something like a Blue Yeti or a Rode NT. These are USB condensing microphones and w…[Read more]

- A period, perhaps a few weeks, when gold and the USD are both rising. Indicates safe haven demand.
- Attempts to smack down the price of gold with large sales on Comex stop working: the price recovers within hours. (This happened in 2017)
- Rising expectations of inflation and/or of negative real interest rates. May also be indicated by…

bumblethebard replied to the topic 2019 Economists cover in the forum Chat with Greg 6 years, 3 months ago
The man in the hat is apparently Walt Whitman (photo attached). 2019 is the 200th anniversary of his birth. Come to that, 2019 is the 150th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, so maybe that is relevant too.

The attached table is a tentative attempt on my part to describe the stages of the economic cycle and when it is a good idea to own precious metals. This assumes you are interested in using your savings to earn money: keeping your savings in precious metals as an insurance is never bad. We seem to be at the late stage of the cycle at present, with…[Read more]
